Questions worth checking

Which assessment year does this comparison use?
The comparison is labeled AY 2026–27 and uses the salary-only slabs for a resident individual below age 60. Do not confuse the assessment year with a financial year label when entering information or checking a return. Rules may change, and individual cases can depend on residence, age, income type, deductions, and elections. The result is a planning estimate, not a filed-return computation. Check the official Income Tax Department schedule and calculator for the relevant assessment year before changing payroll withholding or submitting a return.
How are deductions entered on the old-regime side?
The worksheet separates Section 80C, Section 80D, additional NPS under Section 80CCD(1B), a basic HRA exemption estimate, and other eligible deductions. The displayed caps are arithmetic limits for the modeled case, not confirmation that a particular payment qualifies. Keep receipts and statements, check who paid the premium or contribution, and verify that the amount is permitted under the regime and tax year. Do not repeat the standard deduction or an item already entered in another field. The tool does not determine eligibility, age-specific limits, or every deduction condition.
What is included in the HRA estimate?
The simplified HRA estimate uses annual basic salary, HRA received, rent paid, and the metro or non-metro selection. It takes the lowest of HRA received, rent less ten percent of basic, and the selected percentage of basic, with negative results set to zero. This is a screening calculation, not a complete exemption ruling. Verify city classification and eligible salary components for the applicable year, and retain rental evidence and landlord details where required. Special cases, changes during the year, and employer payroll treatment can change the result.
How does the tool compare the two tax totals?
The old-regime side applies its salary standard deduction, the entered eligible deduction total, the selected slabs, rebate rules, surcharge, marginal relief, and cess. The new-regime total comes from the same salary-tax engine used elsewhere in the product. The displayed difference is an absolute rupee amount and the lower-tax label compares those estimates; it does not account for non-tax costs, other income, special-rate gains, or personal circumstances. The break-even field estimates the extra old-regime deduction needed for its tax to reach the new-regime estimate under this model.
What should I do if my situation is outside the assumptions?
Do not use the result as a final tax figure if you have income beyond ordinary salary, special-rate income, business income, non-resident status, age-based variations, unusual exemptions, or complex employer benefits. The model also does not reproduce every return schedule or payroll rounding convention. Open the official links, compare with the current calculator for your facts, and consult a qualified tax professional when the result affects a filing or a material decision. The most useful next step is to list the missing income or deduction items rather than forcing them into a field with a different meaning.
